Looking for things to do in South Lake Tahoe with toddlers and preschoolers? Discover the best indoor and outdoor activities for kids 5 and under, featuring parent-tested local tips from us at Modern Mountain Vacations.
Heading to South Lake Tahoe with little ones? Awesome choice. Tahoe is a giant natural playground, but exploring with kids 5 and under requires a game plan: engaging activities, indoor backups, and a solid strategy for naptime.
As part of the Modern Mountain Vacations family, we’ve tested these spots firsthand. One of our owners has two kids of her own (now 4 and 6) and has learned exactly what works best through plenty of local trial and error. Here is our parent-tested guide to South Lake Tahoe!
Tahoe’s great outdoors is the main event, and these spots are perfectly paced for little legs and short attention spans.
Depending on which side of town you are staying on, you have two incredible options for a stress-free beach day:
South/West side: Check out Kiva Beach. The walk from the parking area is short and flat, making it easy to haul your cooler and sand toys. It offers shallow water and beautiful mountain views.
East side (Nevada): Head to Round Hill Pines Beach Resort for extra convenience. Along with a calm cove for splashing, they have on-site food and a great beach bar. They will even deliver your food right to your beach spot!

South Lake Tahoe’s oldest beach facility, right in the middle of town, Regan Beach is a jackpot for families. It features a fully updated playground right on the grass overlooking the water, plenty of open lawn, and a shallow water entry area safe for little feet.
Located off Al Tahoe Blvd, this massive park has an excellent playground, open grassy meadows, and public restrooms. Bijou Park also features a fantastic, dedicated bike park where little riders can practice with their striders on small dirt humps and a pump track safely away from the older kids.
Park near the Camp Richardson Ice Cream Parlor and let your kids coast down the flat, paved bike path on strider bikes, ending with a giant scoop of ice cream. If you need to rent wheels, trailers, or tag-alongs, check out these local shops:
Nevada/Stateline: Shoreline Bike Shop on Kingsbury Grade for parent-powered trailer setups.
Mid-Town: Tahoe Bike Company on Harrison Avenue for traditional kids' bikes and multi-passenger surrey bikes.
West Side / Emerald Bay Road: Anderson’s Bicycle Rental, located right at the start of the traffic-free National Forest Bike Trail.

Ski Run Park is a modern, fully fenced playground right in town, meaning you can actually sit down while the kids play safely. Grab lunch from the Whole Foods hot bar down the street to eat at the park, or walk to nearby restaurants.
★ Local Tip: On Friday afternoons during the summer, the Ski Run Farmers Market (3:00 PM – 8:00 PM) takes over the street with food trucks, artisan vendors, and live music. It’s about a 2-minute walk from the park.

Located in Meyers, Paradise Park is a quiet hidden gem with a great playground, mature shade trees, and a calm pond to play in the sand and try to catch frogs or tadpoles.
★ Local Tip: Visit on a Wednesday afternoon during the summer for the Meyers Mountain Market (3:00 PM – 7:30 PM) to enjoy food trucks, local artisans, and live music right by the playground and grass area.
The DIY Route (Sawmill Pond): Grab cheap mini fishing poles from Tahoe Sports LTD and head to Sawmill Pond. This quiet, beautiful spot is designated exclusively for kids under 14.
The Tahoe Trout Farm: For a 100% guaranteed catch, head to the historic Tahoe Trout Farm. For about $10, your group gets bait and tackle for two fully stocked ponds. You pay by the size of the fish you catch, and you can choose to keep it or donate it to local charities.
Weather a bit too chilly, smoky, or just need a break from the sun? South Lake Tahoe has fantastic indoor havens.
A must-visit dedicated indoor play space designed specifically for infants, toddlers, and young kids. It’s clean, safe, full of imaginative toys, and a great place for kids to socialize.

Located on Rufus Allen Blvd, the local library is a fantastic, free indoor refuge with a wonderful kids' section full of books, puzzles, and toys. They host highly popular, free early literacy programs like Mother Goose on the Loose for babies and toddlers, along with preschool storytimes. Check their online calendar for current weekly days and times!
When the weather doesn't cooperate for the lake (or maybe it's even too hot), the Rec Center offers a fantastic "Splash and Play" pool with a zero-depth beach entry. At just $6 for a kid's day pass, it is the best budget-friendly fun in town.

If your little one loves to climb on the furniture, take them to an "Adult and Me" style tumbling class at Inversion Gym. It’s a safe, padded environment perfect for burning off energy.
Check out the indoor, vibrant mini-golf at Tipsy Putt or the outdoor course next door to The Hangar. If your kids love lights and buttons, pop into the RetroActive Arcade—while geared toward older kids, the classic games are a big hit with the 5-and-under crowd.
Pro-tip: Time these drives around afternoon naptime!
This massive indoor trampoline park has dedicated areas perfectly suited for jumpers under 5. Our favorite parent hack: Let them bounce at midday until they are exhausted, grab a quick bite, and let them sleep the entire drive back to Tahoe with the AC blasting.

If you are visiting during the summer, this water park features fantastic splash pads and shallow water play areas designed specifically for toddlers and preschoolers. It’s a guaranteed hit.
