Halloween in Lake Tahoe: Family-Friendly Events, Costume Parties & Cozy Getaways
How to Spend Halloween in Lake Tahoe: Costumes, Candy & Cozy Nights by the Lake
Trick-or-treating in Heavenly Village, costume parties under the pines, and spooky nights tucked into the forest. Here's how to celebrate Halloween in South Lake Tahoe this year!
This year, Halloween falls on a Saturday, which means a full weekend of costume parties, trick-or-treating and cozy nights in.
The best part? You don't have to choose between a big night out and a quiet night in. In Tahoe, you can do both.
At Modern Mountain Vacations, we love helping guests make the most of every season here, and fall is one of our favorites. So we've rounded up the best ways to spend Halloween in South Lake Tahoe, plus a couple of our homes that make the perfect home base for your spooky weekend.
Let's start with the most important question: what kind of Halloween are you planning?

For the Little Ghouls: Family-Friendly Halloween in South Lake Tahoe
If you're bringing the kids (and their costumes), South Lake Tahoe goes all out for families.
Spooky Harbor Kids Fall Festival: Friday, October 23, starting at 4:00 pm. Sand Harbor State Park on the East Shore kicks off Halloween week with games, pumpkin decorating and face painting at 4, trick-or-treating at 6, and Monster House (PG) under the stars at 7. It's free with park entry and worth the scenic drive around the lake. Bring blankets, low-back chairs and a flashlight, since there are no concessions and lighting is limited after dark. Event details here.
Mini Mountain Movers Halloween Party: Wednesday, October 28, 9:30–11:30 am. Perfect for the littlest ghouls, this morning party at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Center has games, crafts and a costume parade at 10:30. Just pay the daily youth drop-in fee, no registration needed.
Kahle Community Center Trunk or Treat: Thursday, October 29, 5:30–8:00 pm. A free, family friendly evening of trunk-or-treating at Kahle Community Center & Park in Stateline, with bounce houses and plenty of candy. Event details here.
Trick-or-Treat at Heavenly Village: Saturday, October 31, 3:00–6:00 pm. The Halloween Celebration at the Heavenly Village is the biggest free trick-or-treat event on the South Shore. Kids can go store to store collecting candy, and there's a $1,000 costume contest, plus the South Lake Tahoe Fire and Police Departments usually stop by with their trucks (always a hit with the little ones!).
Ski Run Spooktacular: Saturday, October 31, 3:00–5:00 pm. The first-ever Ski Run Spooktacular takes over Ski Run Marina this year. It's $5 per child, with proceeds benefiting The Marcella Foundation, and it's an easy walk from Lake Trail Lodge (more on that below!).

Where to Stay with the Family: Lake Trail Lodge
After a big night of trick-or-treating, there's nothing better than walking home to a warm, cozy house.
Lake Trail Lodge is our newest home and the perfect home base for a family Halloween weekend. It sits just off Ski Run Blvd, so you can walk to the Ski Run Spooktacular at Ski Run Marina, stroll down to the lake, and grab dinner at nearby restaurants without moving the car. Heavenly Village and the Stateline casinos are just a few minutes away by car. It sleeps eight, and up to five kids 13 and under don't count toward the total guest count, which makes it a great fit for a couple of families traveling together.
This brand new four bedroom home has a king bed and a private bathroom in every bedroom, so once the candy has been sorted and traded, everyone has their own space to crash. Heated tile floors keep things cozy on a cold October night, and the fully equipped kitchen is ready for a big pancake breakfast before day two of the festivities.

Our Favorite Halloween Kickoff: South Lake Brewing Company
If you're arriving Friday, start the weekend the way we like to: at South Lake Brewing Company.
This local favorite is hosting a free Halloween Costume Party on Friday, October 30, from 6:00 to 9:00 pm at the brewery on Lake Tahoe Blvd. There's a DJ starting at 6, a costume contest and Halloween games at 7, and free candy for anyone who shows up in costume. Grab a pint (or a seltzer), order something from the food truck, and show off your costume before the big night.
It's laid back, it's local, and it's exactly the kind of place we love sending our guests. Tell them Modern Mountain Vacations sent you! 🍻
For the Grown Up Monsters: Adults Only Halloween in Tahoe
Once the little ones are tucked in (or if you left them at home!), Halloween night on the South Shore is all about the costumes.
Magic, Mischief, and Mayhem at The Loft: Saturday, October 31, in Heavenly Village. The Loft's 10th Annual Halloween Bash and Costume Contest turns the lounge into a late-night dance party, with spooky décor and a DJ keeping things going well past midnight. Make a night of it with dinner in the Village first, then dance until the witching hour. Get tickets from The Loft.
Freaker’s Ball at Bally’s Lake Tahoe: Saturday, October 31, doors open at 9:00 pm. Tahoe's longest-running Halloween party has been a South Shore tradition since 1978, and this year it's back for its 47th year with an all-new experience in the Bally's Showroom. Expect outrageous costumes, live sideshow and burlesque performances, DJs spinning into the early morning, and a $15,000 costume contest with $7,500 cash for first place. Judging runs from 9 to 11 pm, with winners announced at midnight. Tickets are $64.99 and it's 21+. Get tickets from Bally's.
And if you're in town Friday, South Lake Brewing Company's costume party is the perfect warm up for the big night (more on that above!).

Prefer a Quieter Halloween? Go Cozy & a Little Bit Spooky
Not every Halloween needs a costume contest. Sometimes the best way to celebrate is a scary movie, a crackling fire pit, and a dark forest just outside the window.
Where to Stay for a Cozy Halloween: Echo View Chalet
Echo View Chalet is tucked away behind massive granite boulders in the quiet Echo View Estates neighborhood, bordering the forest with views of Echo Peak and Mt. Tallac. It's just the right amount of secluded for a moody fall weekend, while still being only a few minutes from the shops and restaurants in Meyers and the "Y."
Spend the afternoon hiking down to the nearby sawmill pond, then come back for dinner by the fire pit as the sun sets behind the mountains. On a clear night, the stars out here are unreal (and just a little bit eerie). It sleeps four, making it perfect for couples or a small family.
And yes, your pup can come too! Echo View Chalet is dog-friendly with approval, so go ahead and pack the doggy costume. 🎃🐶

A Few Tips Before You Go
Pack layers (and warm costumes). Late October nights in Tahoe can dip below freezing, and early-season snow isn't unheard of. Plan a costume that works with a jacket, or one that is a jacket!
Check road conditions before you drive up. Fall storms can roll in quickly over the passes. Check Caltrans or Nevada DOT before heading up, and always carry chains this time of year.
Don't leave candy in the car. This one's a real Tahoe tip year round, but bears are very active in the fall, and they have an excellent nose for Halloween candy. Bring all treats (and anything with a scent) inside, and use the bear box for trash.
Party out, cozy in. Our homes are in quiet residential neighborhoods with quiet hours from 10 pm to 8 am, so save the big celebrations for the Village and enjoy a relaxed night once you're home.
Book early. With Halloween on a Saturday this year, it's a popular weekend on the South Shore, so grab your dates while the best homes are still available.
Ready to Plan Your Tahoe Halloween?
Whether you're trick-or-treating through Heavenly Village with the kids, dancing the night away at The Loft, or curled up by the fire watching a scary movie in the forest, Halloween in Lake Tahoe is a little bit spooky and a whole lot of fun.
And when the night is over, having a cozy place to come home to makes all the difference.
