It's local's summer (October!) in Tahoe, but you're still invited!

Take a Drive to Hope Valley

Take a trip over Luther Pass (just past the town of Meyers) to Hope Valley. About 20 minutes from South Lake Tahoe, this is where the fall colors in the Tahoe area really shine. The aspens shift from light yellow to brilliant gold, set against granite peaks, open meadows, and the winding West Fork of the Carson River.

It's a can't miss short road trip this fall. Pack a thermos of coffee, pull over at one of the meadow turnouts, and take your time. Color usually peaks in early to mid October, so the sooner you go, the better.

Taylor Creek and the Fallen Leaf Lake Aspens

Visit the Taylor Creek Stream Profile Chamber at the Taylor Creek Visitor Center. Little kids love seeing fish swim by the underwater viewing windows, and October is prime time to watch the bright red kokanee salmon spawning up the creek. Keep your eyes open: you might get lucky and catch sight of a bear fishing along the banks (always from a safe distance).

Just after Taylor Creek, head over to the aspen groves near Fallen Leaf Lake. This easy, flat trail system is perfect for all ages and full of Tahoe's fall colors. If you're traveling with pups, the lake is a great spot for a swim, too. End up at the shoreline with stunning mountain views!

Spooky Harbor Movies at Sand Harbor

Catch a flick at Sand Harbor this October. Spooky Harbor is back for its 5th annual season, and it's one of the more unique offerings in Tahoe this month: movies under the stars at one of our favorite state parks, right on the water. Admission is free with the standard park entrance fee.

Upcoming Shows here:

October 2nd, 2026, 8 p.m.: Get Out (R)
October 9th, 2026, 7:30 p.m.: Hocus Pocus (PG)
October 16th, 2026, 7:30 p.m.: I Know What You Did Last Summer (R)
October 23rd, 2026, 7 p.m.: Kids Fall Festival (starts at 4 p.m.) + Monster House (PG)
October 30th, 2026, 7 p.m.: Trick 'r Treat (R)
November 1st, 2026, 6 p.m.: Día de los Muertos celebration (starts at 3 p.m.) + Coco (PG)

Movies begin roughly 30 minutes after sunset on the Sand Harbor stage. Grab a blanket, a low-back chair, a flashlight, and warm clothes. There are no food concessions, so pack snacks and a thermos of hot cocoa. Shows are weather dependent, so check the Nevada State Parks events page before you head out.

Oktoberfest at Camp Richardson

A favorite tradition of locals and visitors alike, Oktoberfest at Camp Richardson has been running lakeside for over 27 years. Admission and bike valet are free, and you'll find a beer and wine garden with seasonal brews, bratwurst, pretzels, apple strudel, live German music, and plenty of traditional German attire.

It's family friendly too, with face painting, games, crafts, and the always entertaining stein-holding competition. The festival happens the first weekend of October every year, so if you missed it this time, mark your calendar for next fall.

Slow Down at Palisades Tahoe

Just relax at Palisades Tahoe. Book The Après Stay, our 2 bedroom, 2 bath luxury condo just steps from the village. October is one of the best times to visit if you want the place to yourself: you'll have pretty much clear access to the hiking trails around Palisades, cooler temperatures, and an easy stroll to coffee, dinner, and the shops in the village.

Looking for a bigger thrill? Check out the Tahoe Via Ferrata for the last few weeks of the year. No prior climbing experience is needed, and the guided routes reward you with huge views over Olympic Valley, especially when the fall light hits the granite.

Bike or Stroll the East Shore Trail

Take a stroll or a bike ride along the East Shore Trail. It's a favorite any time of year, but especially in fall: the trail is much quieter, the temperatures are cooler, and the views of the clear turquoise water are just as stunning. The paved path runs about three miles from Incline Village toward Sand Harbor, with plenty of overlooks to stop for photos.

If you'd like to explore on two wheels, check out Vista Trail Bikes in Incline Village. They rent Class 1 e-bikes, traditional cruisers, and family equipment for a self-guided ride toward Sand Harbor State Park. Time it right and you can ride out in the afternoon and stay for a Spooky Harbor movie.

Other Fall Favorites

Start with breakfast at Driftwood. Driftwood Café is a South Lake Tahoe staple for a hearty, cozy breakfast. Fuel up here before a full day of exploring, and Driftwood is typically a little bit less busy this season!

Set sail with Sail Tahoe Blue. It's not too late to take a cruise with Sail Tahoe Blue. They're still out on the water this month, departing from Ski Run Blvd, and October is one of the most beautiful and quietest times on the lake. Choose a shared public cruise or book a private charter for your group.

Catch a great story at Cascade Kitchens. Looking for an inspiring story while enjoying some of the best bites in Tahoe? Check out this month's Ski Run Presents: Frost, Story of a Lifetime, held at Cascade Kitchens, South Lake Tahoe's food hall and bar.

Cozy Nights In

After a full day out, October nights in Tahoe are made for staying in. These are three of our favorite homes for it.

Warm up at Sierra Sauna House. Just stay in for the evening and relax in the sauna. No questions asked here. Sierra Sauna House in South Lake Tahoe's Bijou neighborhood has a private sauna in its own backyard structure, a 6-person hot tub, and a fireplace for the cool fall nights. It sleeps 8 across 4 bedrooms and is about 5 minutes from the lake. Reach out to us, April and Tor, for booking options and a discount code!

Game night at Lake Trail Lodge. Gather together for game night at Lake Trail Lodge. This is one of our guests' favorite homes, and kids love the games, the nine-foot shuffleboard table with mini bowling, and the multiple living rooms for the whole family. You're just off Ski Run Blvd, an easy walk to the lake, local trails, and dinner, and only a short stroll to Sail Tahoe Blue and Riva Grill.

Fireside at Echo View Chalet. End the day around the gas fire pit at Echo View Chalet, with Adirondack chairs, market lights, and views toward Mt. Tallac. Tucked near Meyers, it's the perfect home base for your Hope Valley drive, and dogs are welcome on a case-by-case basis.

A Few More October Favorites

Jump in the lake. It's not too late! October often brings surprisingly warm afternoons, and even if you aren't jumping in, your pup might still love getting in the water. Consider it nature's ultimate cold plunge.

Bring the dog. Fall is the best season to invite the dog to Tahoe. Beaches and trails are quiet, the air is cool, and there's room to roam. Fallen Leaf Lake and the trails around Meyers are some of our favorite spots for four-legged guests.

Catch a sunset on the beach. With fewer people on the sand, October sunsets are pure magic. Bring a blanket and a warm layer, and watch the sky turn pink over the water.

Give back on Keep Sierra Clean Day. Join Sierra-at-Tahoe's 18th annual Keep Sierra Clean Day on Sunday, Oct. 11, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Volunteers help clean up the mountain, followed by a day of good vibes and community. Pre-registration is required.
