Have you visited Sugar Pine Sate Park on Lake Tahoe's quiet West Shore?

A few weeks ago on a warm winter day, we headed out from South Lake Tahoe to explore the West Shore for the day. Tucked just south of Tahoe City and an easy drive north from Emerald Bay, Sugar Pine State Park is one of our favorite lesser-known Tahoe gems to explore. Think crystal-clear, teal-blue water, towering sugar pines, and wide-open lake views of Heavenly Mountain, Cave Rock, and Mount Rose.

We stopped by on a warm winter day and wandered the park grounds while they were mostly clear of snow. In the snowier months, these same trails are perfect for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, which makes Sugar Pine a true year-round Tahoe experience.

The lake was especially stunning. Caribbean-blue and almost convincing enough to make us consider a swim. Almost. For the record, Lake Tahoe stays around 39°F below the surface year-round, so it was definitely not warm this time of year!

We also loved walking around the exterior of the historic Sugar Pine Lodge. While it wasn’t open during our visit, the stone lodge feels like stepping back in time. Full interior tours are available in the summer months, and we already can’t wait to go back, ideally on an 80-degree day with an actual dip in the lake and a beachside picnic planned.

If you are exploring Lake Tahoe and want fewer crowds, incredible views, and a classic step back in time feel, Sugar Pine State Park is a must-stop.
