Planning a Lake Tahoe Trip? Here's How to Make the Most of Your Stay

A little planning goes a long way in Tahoe. From choosing the right season to finding the perfect place to stay, here's how to plan a trip you'll want to come back to!

Lake Tahoe has a way of making you want to do it all.

One day you're imagining a summer afternoon on the lake, and the next you're looking at hiking trails, scenic drives, cozy mountain restaurants, and wondering how you're going to fit everything into one trip.

But here's the thing: you don't have to do it all to have an incredible Tahoe vacation.

The best trips often come down to a few simple choices: visiting at the right time of year, staying somewhere that makes it easy to enjoy the area, and leaving yourself enough time to slow down and take it all in.

Whether you're planning your first visit or coming back for another stay, a little preparation can make a big difference. Tahoe looks and feels different in every season, and the experience you have in July can be completely different from a snowy weekend in January.

At Modern Mountain Vacations, we love helping guests make the most of their time here. So we've put together a few things to think about before you book, along with some of our favorite ways to enjoy the lake once you arrive.

Let's start with the most important decision: when to visit.

First, Decide When You're Coming; It Changes Everything

Lake Tahoe feels completely different depending on the season. Your travel dates will influence what you can do, how busy the area is, and what kind of experience you'll have.

Summer: June–September

Summer is peak Tahoe for a reason. The days are warm, the evenings are cool, hiking trails are all open, and the lake becomes the center of everything. You'll see kayaks and paddleboards along the shoreline, boats cruising around Emerald Bay, and locals and visitors alike spending long afternoons at the beach.

A few of our favorite ways to spend a summer day here: book a private sailing charter out of Ski Run Marina with Sail Tahoe Blue for a sunset cruise on the water, join a chef-led food tour with Taste of Tahoe Tours to eat your way through the best local spots.

Summer is one of the busiest seasons here, especially around holidays, events like the ACC Celebrity Golf Tournament, Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival, and numerous summer concert series around the lake. If you have your travel dates in mind, we recommend booking early so you can choose from the best selection of available homes.

And don't forget: Lake Tahoe sits at 6,225 feet above sea level, so even on a beautiful summer day, temperatures can drop once the sun goes down. Pack layers!

Winter: November–April

If skiing, snowboarding (or just seeing snow for the first time) is the main reason for your trip, winter is the season to visit.

There's something especially beautiful about seeing the lake surrounded by snow. The landscape looks completely different, and a snowy morning in Tahoe can be just as memorable as a summer beach day.

Traveling to Tahoe in winter does require a little more planning, though. Mountain weather can change quickly, and driving conditions can be challenging during storms. Check road conditions before heading up through CalTrans or Nevada DOT. You won't have to figure this out on your own, either! We always send you our winter driving guide before your arrival, with the best route to your home, chain control tips, and what to expect on the drive in, so you can focus on the snow instead of the stress.

Shoulder Season: May and October

May and October are much quieter in Tahoe, which can be a wonderful thing.

May is when the snowmelt is at its peak, which makes it the best time of year to see Eagle Falls at Emerald Bay at full force. It's a short hike from the highway, and the payoff is worth the crowds you'll avoid by coming before summer.

And if you're coming in May, our home, The Mountain Haus, is a favorite for the season. This four-bedroom home is in a quiet neighborhood near Ski Run Marina, with a private hot tub in the backyard for the cooler spring evenings and a short drive to the Emerald Bay trailheads. It sleeps eight, which makes it a good fit for a couple of families or a group of friends looking for a slower-paced trip, and shoulder-season rates mean you'll often get more home for your money than you would in July.

You'll generally find fewer crowds, and accommodations can be more affordable than during peak summer or winter periods. The tradeoff is that some seasonal businesses, activities, and hiking trails may have limited availability.

If you're planning a trip to Tahoe in October and love running, check out the Lake Tahoe Marathon weekend before booking your stay.

If you're more interested in enjoying the scenery, relaxing by the lake, exploring local restaurants, and avoiding the busiest times of year, the shoulder seasons are worth considering.
